The Karnataka High Court has dismissed Twitter’s bid to challenge the orders issued by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India, for non-compliance and imposed a fine of Rs 50 lakh on the micro-blogging platform.

The Karnataka High Court has dismissed Twitter\u2019s bid to challenge the orders issued by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India, for non-compliance and imposed a fine of Rs 50 lakh on the micro-blogging platform.<\/span><\/p>\n

For the uninitiated, The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology had asked Twitter to take down some accounts with tweets related to the farmers\u2019 protests and coronavirus. Twitter simply dismissed the orders, and said that the orders \u201cdemonstrate excessive use of powers,\u201d as per LiveLaw.<\/span><\/p>\n

Twitter was reportedly sent notices for the same, but it reportedly did not comply. In fact, Twitter was also also told that the punishment for \u201cnon-compliance is 7 years imprisonment and unlimited fine,\u201d but that too, failed to \u201cdeter\u201d Twitter.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cKarnataka High Court has dismissed the petition filed by @Twitter, challenging the blocking orders issued to it by @GoI_MeitY u\/s.69(A) of IT Act 2000,\u201d Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Union Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, said in a tweet.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rajeev Chandrasekhar has already challenged former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey\u2019s claim that the social media platform was pressured by the Indian government during the farmers\u2019 protest in 2021. He called Dorsey\u2019s statements an \u201coutright lie\u201d and an \u201cattempt to whitewash Twitter\u2019s controversial past.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSo you have not given any reason why you delayed compliance, more than a year of delay\u2026then all of sudden you comply and approach the Court. You are not a farmer but a billion dollar company,\u201d the court\u2019s Bench said, announcing the verdict.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
