Curated By: Shaurya Sharma<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n Last Updated: June 28, 2023, 13:59 IST<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n Mountain View, California, USA<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n Google’s Project Iris has reportedly been abandoned. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n Google was reportedly working on its own augmented reality solution in the form of an AR headset, code-named \u2018Project Iris.\u2019 However, the search giant appears to have abandoned its glasses-like AR project, according to Insider<\/em>. <\/span><\/p>\n This follows the entry of competitors such as Meta\u2019s new Quest headset lineup and Apple\u2019s recently announced Vision Pro mixed reality headset into the market.<\/span><\/p>\n As per Insider, Google has \u201ckilled\u201d its AR glasses project, \u201cknown internally by the codename Iris.\u201d This development comes post multiple layoffs, and Clay Bavor, Google\u2019s chief of augmented and virtual reality, reportedly leaving the company \u201caccording to three people familiar with the matter.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Now, the company is going to focus on software, and not hardware. Per Insider, Google is creating \u201csoftware platforms for AR that it hopes to license to other manufacturers\u201d who make headsets. Called the \u2018micro XR\u2019 platform for glasses, the software is being internally tested as \u2018Betty,\u2019 and is being touted as \u201cAndroid for AR.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n You can think of\u00a0the micro XR\u00a0platform as a headset software that can be licensed by manufacturers for their headsets, similar to how Android is used by various OEMs for their smartphones.<\/span><\/p>\n Google is still developing its \u2018ski-goggles-like\u2019 headset, but in partnership with Samsung.
