(Reuters)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) asked a federal court on Monday to block Microsoft from completing its $69 billion buyout of gaming giant Activision Blizzard, a court filing showed.<\/p>\n \u201cA preliminary injunction is necessary to\u2026 prevent interim harm” while the FTC determines whether \u201cthe proposed acquisition violates US antitrust law,” the regulator said in the filing.<\/p>\n In requesting the preliminary injunction at the Northern California District Court, the US government sought to prevent the companies from finalizing the deal before a July 18 deadline.<\/p>\n An FTC hearing is set for August to argue the merits of the deal, but the appeal to a federal court will potentially see Microsoft subject to a restraining order blocking the accord before that process has run its course.<\/p>\n The California judge would need to agree to stop the deal after hearing arguments by the FTC on why the buyout is illegal and from Microsoft on why it should go ahead.<\/p>\n \u201cWe welcome the opportunity to present our case in federal court,” said Microsoft President Brad Smith.<\/p>\n \u201cWe believe accelerating the legal process in the US will ultimately bring more choice and competition to the market,” he added.<\/p>\n Xbox-owner Microsoft launched a bid for Activision Blizzard early last year, seeking to establish the world\u2019s third biggest gaming firm by revenue after China\u2019s Tencent and Japan\u2019s PlayStation maker Sony.<\/p>\n While the European Union has greenlit the deal, Britain\u2019s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) blocked it in April, arguing it would harm competition in cloud gaming.<\/p>\n The FTC in December sued to block the transaction with Activision Blizzard, maker of the blockbuster \u201cCall of Duty” title, over concerns that it would stifle competition.<\/p>\n The regulator is led by Lina Khan, an antitrust academic who had been an advocate of breaking up the biggest tech firms before she was nominated by President Joe Biden to the job in 2021.<\/p>\n Khan has accused Meta, Facebook\u2019s parent company, of stifling competition by buying up startups and the FTC has carried out investigations of Amazon.<\/p>\n The US Department of Justice, meanwhile, has filed lawsuits arguing that Google has committed antitrust violations in online search as well as in advertising.<\/p>\n (This story has not been edited by News18 staff and is published from a syndicated news agency feed – AFP<\/a>)<\/i> <\/div>\n [ad_2] [ad_1] Last Updated: June 13, 2023, 05:11 IST Washington D.C., United States of America (USA) Microsoft is facing a tough time buying Activision.
