(Image: Reuters)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Reddit CEO Steve Huffman has said that the social discussion platform was never designed to support third-party applications.<\/p>\n In protest to the application programming interface (API) changes, thousands of Reddit communities are still dark that are forcing some third-party developers to shut down their apps, reports The Verge.<\/p>\n According to Huffman, those third-party apps aren\u2019t adding much value to the platform.<\/p>\n \u201cSo the vast majority of the uses of the API \u2014 not (third-party apps like Apollo for Reddit) \u2014 the other 98 per cent of them, make tools, bots, enhancements to Reddit. That\u2019s what the API is for,” Reddit CEO said in a statement.<\/p>\n \u201cIt was never designed to support third-party apps.”<\/p>\n Huffman further objected to the third-party apps that are competing with his company.<\/p>\n \u201cI didn\u2019t know \u2014 and this is my fault \u2014 the extent that they were profiting off of our API. That these were not charities.”<\/p>\n When questioned about if he genuinely believes that the blackouts haven\u2019t impacted his decision-making around the API pricing changes at all.<\/p>\n \u201cThat\u2019s our business decision, and we\u2019re not undoing that business decision,” Huffman replied.<\/p>\n According to a fact sheet shared by the company on Thursday, there are now more than 1,00,000 \u201cactive communities”, 57 million \u201cdaily active uniques” and over 50,000 \u201cdaily active moderators” on the platform.<\/p>\n In an internal memo sent on Monday to employees, Reddit CEO had said that like any other blowups on the platform, \u201cthis one will pass as well”.<\/p>\n Last week, Huffman had hosted an AMA (Ask Me Anything) session to discuss the platform\u2019s controversial API changes, confirming that the company is not planning to revive its coming API pricing changes that have caused multiple developers to announce they will be shutting down their apps.<\/p>\n (This story has not been edited by News18 staff and is published from a syndicated news agency feed – IANS<\/a>)<\/i> <\/div>\n [ad_2] [ad_1] Published By: Shaurya Sharma Last Updated: June 16, 2023, 09:52 IST San Francisco, California, USA Reddit CEO defends the platform’s new changes.
