EU lawmakers agreed on Wednesday to changes in draft artificial intelligence<\/a> rules proposed by the European Commission in a bid to set a global standard for a technology used in everything from automated factories to bots such as ChatGPT<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The lawmakers will now have to thrash out details with European Union countries before the draft rules become legislation.<\/p>\n

“AI raises a lot of questions \u2013 socially, ethically, economically. But now is not the time to hit any ‘pause button’. On the contrary, it is about acting fast and taking responsibility,” EU industry chief Thierry Breton said.<\/p>\n

The biggest issue is expected to be facial recognition and biometric surveillance where some lawmakers want a total ban while EU<\/a> countries want an exception for national security, defence and military purposes.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday backed<\/a> a proposal by some artificial intelligence executives for the creation of an international AI watchdog body like the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).<\/p>\n

Generative AI technology that can spin authoritative prose from text prompts has captivated the public since ChatGPT launched six months ago and became the fastest-growing app of all time. AI has also become a focus of concern over its ability to create deepfake pictures and other misinformation.<\/p>\n

“Alarm bells over the latest form of artificial intelligence \u2013 generative AI \u2013 are deafening. And they are loudest from the developers who designed it,” Guterres told reporters. “We must take those warnings seriously.”<\/p>\n
