According to a report by Verge, these changes have forced some third-party developers to shut down their apps. Now, Reddit’s CEO Steve Huffman has cleared the company’s stance about third-party apps on the platform. Huffman has said that Reddit was never designed to support third-party apps which aren’t even adding much value to the platform.
What Reddit CEO said
In a statement, Huffman said: “So the vast majority of the uses of the API — not (third-party apps like Apollo for Reddit) — the other 98 per cent of them, make tools, bots, enhancements to Reddit. That’s what the API is for. It was never designed to support third-party apps.”
He also objected to the third-party apps that are competing with Reddit. “I didn’t know — and this is my fault — the extent that they were profiting off of our API. That these were not charities,” Huffman added.
“That’s our business decision, and we’re not undoing that business decision,” Huffman replied when asked about the impact of the blackout on his decision-making around the API pricing changes.

The company also shared a fact sheet that claims that there are now more than 1,00,000 “active communities”, 57 million “daily active uniques” and over 50,000 “daily active moderators” on Reddit.
What Reddit CEO said to employees

In an internal memo sent to employees, Reddit CEO said that like any other outbursts on the platform, “this one will pass as well”.
Last week, Huffman hosted an AMA (Ask Me Anything) session to discuss the platform’s controversial API changes. He also confirmed that the company is not planning to revive its coming API pricing changes. These changes have caused multiple developers to announce shutting down their apps on the platform.

[ad_2]

Source link

[ad_1] Thousands of Reddit communities reportedly remain dark in protest of the application programming interface (API) pricing changes on the social discussion platform.
